My Shrinking Baby

Last night was a difficult night. I’m talking up 5 times, no more than 1-2 hours of sleep at a time kind of difficult.

Something was clearly bothering her. She had a bad case of the screamies – which isn’t normal. Most of the time, if she has a bad night, she is just awake and wants to party. But last night? No partying for her. She was ticked.

And somewhere amidst the rocking, cuddling, gripe water, singing, bum patting, tears and other futile attempts to soothe my baby and get her back to sleep – I got frustrated and discouraged.

Now I know in my head that her rough night could have been caused by teething, a sore tummy, being too hot, being too cold, or something else or something else or something else.

But sometimes, in the thick of it, you feel like it’s your fault. Like you are doing something entirely wrong. And that’s how I felt last night.

So I woke the hubby. Scratch that. I tried to wake the hubby.

I told him I needed help. I didn’t know what was wrong with her. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I felt like this was my fault.

His response?

“Don’t worry Babe. She’s just a baby. She is growing and shrinking. Growing and shrinking”. And he rolled over.

Hm, okay.

Well – the growing part I was aware of. But the shrinking?

I was unaware that my baby was shrinking and that this may or may not cause her to sleep poorly. I’ll have to tuck that one away for future sleepless nights.

Needless to say, my dead-to-the-world-doesn’t-hear-a-thing-and-talks-like-crazy-in-his-sleep husband was impossible to wake up last night.

At least his shrinking baby explanation lightened my mood a bit and gave me something to (kind of) laugh about.

aww poor girl! sorry to say that it really doesn't get easier--probably not until she can talk and tell you what's hurting her. at almost 14 months and with only 3 teeth Logan has been suffering at night too. our trick? while it's not everyones first choice a half or full (whichever you prefer) dose of motrin with two hylands teething tabs does wonders!! ps I know hylands was recalled but I'm not too worried about it. anywhooo good luck! hugs to you all!

Growing and shrinking?! LOL :) Did you laugh, or want to strangle him?

Sorry you had a rough night. :(

Hahaha too funny! We have had 2 nights like that this week as well and I'm pooped! A top tooth finally started to poke through so I'm assuming thats what his issue is. I also woke Hubby up and handed him the baby at one point and said idk what else to do but I'm done!

Umm...are all husbands like this? I mean not the shrinking part, but the dead-to-the-world part? Peter never wakes up when she cries. Luckily since we both work I have a little more arguing ability to make him get up too.

Hope you both get some sleep today AND tonight!

LOL! That is hilarious. I knew babies grew but I was UNaware of the shrinkage issue.

Yeah, my husband tried to find our baby in his pillowcase one night.

The illogical awake/sleep talk is funny and scary at the same time!

Shrinking baby...that's a new one.

Although I cannot relate to the shrinking baby you have :) I can relate to the rough nights. Natalie used to go to sleep so well on her own. Now I put her down and she screams and I have to rock her silly butt to sleep. One night...4 hours. AWFUL! And Matt wasn't home. He can do it so well...and I suck at it. Clearly.

Hoping it gets better soon! Maybe she's going through a growth spurt?? :)

Maybe he said "growing and shrieking!" Hope that all gets worked out! A tired mommy is a cranky mommy! (Especially when daddy is sleeping through it all!)
