Cooking Business

There is a question that I have heard a number of times over the past few years, but more so over the past few months. Many people have asked me if I have a desire to start a catering business.

My answer: Absolutely ...... NOT.

Why not, you ask? Let me explain.

1. I am just not that good. I love to cook and bake but I have many many recipe flops just like the rest of them. There is no way I would ever be confident enough to have someone pay me money to consume my food. In fact, sometimes I feel like I should be paying people money to have them consume my food.

2. Perhaps even more importantly - I am one of those people who believes that one should not mix business with pleasure. As an example, I love love love children. I cannot wait to have a whole slew of them to myself. So, I went to university and got an undergrad degree (and am currently working on a graduate degree) centered around children and youth. During that time, I have done a few placements with children and even held a paid position as an assistant to a JK/SK teacher (shout out to, Miss W!). During this time I realized that perhaps the worst possible decision I could ever make would be to work directly with children. I am fairly confident I would leave at the end of the day hating the little devils rather than desiring procreation.

Cooking is far too relaxing, therapeutic and enjoyable for me to ever consider making a career out of it. That would be a disaster waiting to happen. I can just picture it now - Lucy is freaking out because she just found out that there are going to be 10 extra people to feed, Lucy is freaking out because she just ran out of flour and has to make 52 pies, Lucy is freaking out because [insert bad scenario here].

Sure, if a friend ever asked me to put together a meal for a family get together, or to whip up some sweet treats for a party or something like that I'm sure I'd agree. But, while I know better than to say never, you should not expect to see Lucy going into the catering business any time soon.
3. Plus, I sometimes let my dog lick pizza sauce off my fingers while I'm cooking.

As a side note, this wasn't actually supposed to be part of my reasoning - I was looking for a photo of myself cooking and when I found this one I realized that this should probably be the number one reason I won't start a food related business. Rest assured, if I'm cooking for you, I promise I will wash my hands between dog slobber and food contact.

Oh my. I don't let the dog lick my fingers- but I definitely lick my own. Oops.

If you ever do start one- I would love to be a part of it! = )

Haha cute post. I'm sure people would love it if you started one but your reasons make complete sense to me.

Adorable post! I love baking/cooking, but I could never imagine how anyone makes a career out of it! It would be too stressful. And can I mention how much I LOVE the photo of you and your dog? Our big problem is that we have BIG dogs [saint bernards, newfies and an oversized german pointer] and when they smell food, slobber goes EVERYWHERE! It can get pretty disgusting and turns into a full-time and very daily chore. :)

Hahaha! Well, I'd still eat your food, dog saliva and all! Because I do that too!

HAHA. Love the last picture of you & your dog! I couldn't cater either. First I'm not that great of a cook but the stress would be way too much for me! I get stressed enough trying to decide meals for two people

Hilarious! I actually feel the same way. When I started making cakes...I thought...man...this would be great to do full time. Now, I know the ugly truth. I get stressed to the max when a cake is due. I'm stressed now and my next one is due in October! I could never make a living doing this. I like to do it for fun more than for money. Plus, not everything has to be so perfect when you do it for fun!

Oh my gosh, you're so funny with the dog slobber. What a good dog mom you are. :) I know what you mean about the kiddo thing. I can't wait to have nine hundred and eleven kids. But I had a job as a daycare worker/babysitter and HATED it. Oh man, I wanted to jump out the window every day.
