WFMW - Stinky Sweater

I've never joined up on Works for me Wednesday before because I didn't really feel like I have anything amazing to share. I enjoy reading some of the tips that are posted and have made use of many of them. But today when I realized it was being posted as backwards edition, I decided to do so because I have a dilemma and I need help!

I have a stinky sweater. I got it for Christmas and the make up is 60% acrylic, 25% nylon and 15% wool. APPARENTLY, the tag says hand was only in cold water. Well, folks, I don't always read the care instructions on my clothing in time. I washed the sweater in the machine and now it stinks. Like musty, nasty stink. I have tried hand washing since then, hoping to get the stink out. It still stinks. Does it stink because I put it in the washing machine? I really love the sweater and it wasn't exactly cheap so I don't want to hear that it's doomed to stinkdom for the rest of its life. Does anyone, ANYONE, have any suggestions as to how I can un-stinkify my dear sweater?

Hi Lucy! It's so great to meet a fellow Canadian Blogger :) Your blog is great, sorry I don't have any solutions to offer on your stinky sweater...good luck!

It doesn't seem like it would be from putting it in the washer, unless you let it sit in there for a few days. Then sometimes things get musty.
You could try soaking it in water w/ a cup of white vinegar, perhaps repeating until the smell is gone.
Or use baking soda instead of vinegar, or borax.
You could try Febreze, but that seems like it would just cover up the smell rather than remove it.

I think I would try soaking it in water with a couple of tablespoons of baking soda overnight. Then I would lay it to dry. Too bad it's so cold, or you could lay it outside. I have had that happen before to me too. I wasn't that super bad though. Good luck!

I second the baking soda idea. Vinegar works well too (but not together, there might be a reaction that could harm your sweater). I use vinegar in my washer with my towels to get the musty smells out.

Or maybe try some kind of pet deodorizer on it? Like the kind one would use for a carpet or sofa if a pet piddles on it? That stuff is STRONG and kills pet smells right away so maybe it would work?

Good luck :)

that's so weird!

i hate a stinky couch cushion, and i sprinkled it with baking soda, let it sit overnight, and vacuumed it up--twice. that did the trick.

good luck!

I think the only way for you to un-stink any of your clothes is to not wear them in the first place. I hate to break it to you, but it's not your clothes that stink...

I think you have your answer- vinegar, baking soda or borax. The miracle workers. Good luck!

I once had a silk sweater and it always had this funky odor. So it may be the blend. I would definitely try the vinegar and/or baking soda solution. Can't hurt right?

I'd try the dishwasher if I were you.

Can I just tell you how much I LOVE the heading on your blog? It's so pretty and fun!

Thanks for your comment :) I am going to search for that song and pass it on.

I'd try Febreeze. Bizarre though. Like why would it stink like that? If you end up getting the stink out, let us know how.
