The worst thing about Italy....

... is the gelato.

Actually, that is a LIE. The best thing about Italy is the gelato. The worst thing about Italy is that when you go there, they display delicious gelato all over the place for a ridiculously cheap price, make you fall in love and then send you home wanting more! It has almost been two months since I returned from my trip and I still think about gelato every.single.day. Last night I had had enough and I told the fabulous dude that we were heading two towns over to the gelato bar. So, off we went. I had never had gelato in Canada before, or anywhere except Italy, so I didn't know what to expect.

While the gelato I had last night resides wholly on the tasty end of the tasty-yucky spectrum it pales in comparison to the Italian deliacy it is attempting to recreate. What I had last night (lemon and pomegrante) was yummy, yet it was more icy than Italian gelato. We didn't think it tasted a whole lot different than frozen yogurt. Besides, when I got there, I was dreadfully disappointed that they didn't have pistachio or hazelnut ... my two favourite flavours.

There are at least two or three other places near me that I know sell gelato so I guess I have just carved out a mission for myself. I will find good gelato in Canada!

Try the gelato bar in the limeridge (sp?) mall. I've only ever had it there, myself, but I was very impressed. I even passed up a DQ blizzard to try it and was not disappointed! They had like 30+ flavours - I had a reeses pieces kind. So creamy and delish! I've never had it in Italy, so I don't know if it will compare but worth a try. :)

I love gelato! If you ever make it down to Florida, we have a place here that makes it just like they do in Italy! Complete with pistachio and hazelnut galore!

Or knowing you Lucy, you will learn how to make it and it will be even better than Italy's version!!! :-) Oh yes, I wanted to ask...does your family do a cookbook for your reunions? I know you would have so many wonderful recipes to contribute!!!

When you find some, please let me know! I discovered my all-time favorite gelato at a little cafe about a block away from the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The first time we went, we loved the flavors they offered; we went back every night of our trip [big oops, I know]. When we returned to Rome for a second time, the little cafe was seemingly closed! It was a horrible discovery. I haven't found any in my neck of the woods, so I have to settle for Coldstone. Disappointing to say the least. Please let us know how your continued mission goes! :)

Hope you had a wonderful 4th. :)

See, I read your blog title and thought you were going to talk about Italian drivers! That was the worst thing about Italy. Gelato was the best! I miss it, too. There's an awesome place in FL near my parents' condo that serves it, but that's the only place I've found where the gelato was "real". I think I may learn how to make some.

So yummy! We have a gelato bar in our grocery store's cafe. It's a fantastic treat (and bribing tool) on a hot day.
BTW, I'd say that's not a bad problem. Gelato in Italy being something you miss. ;)

I'm new to your blog, and having been spending the day (on and off) reading from the beginning. I must say Gelato is the ONLY thing I love about Italy. I'm a Canadian living outside of Rome, and Italy is a difficult place to live - but the gelato makes it so much better. I would eat it every day if my husband let me!
