The Big Switch

We made the big switch a week ago. We moved Evalyn into her own room and she now sleeps in her crib. I had myself all psyched up that the transition was going to be so difficult for both of us. I assumed that I would lay awake all night wondering if she was okay alone there in her room and that she would likewise lay awake all night missing the coziness of sleeping right next to her Mama.

Not so much.

We all (read: I) sleep so much better now that she’s in her own room.

She is such a noisy sleeper and it was getting worse and worse and worse. Even on nights where she was only getting up to eat once, I would often find myself waking up seven or eight times because of her little noises, thinking she was ready to eat. And there were times when I picked her up from her bassinet and brought her into bed to feed her, only to discover that she was still fast asleep. Sure, having to actually get out of bed and walk to her room to get her is kind of annoying, but I have found I’d rather do that than what I was doing.

So far, she hasn’t started to sleep any longer stretches now that she’s in her crib but, I certainly sleep more solidly. Our apartment is small so we decided that it wasn’t necessary to set up monitors and that she would have to squawk loud enough for me to hear her for me to get up. So far, this has worked well. I don’t have to hear every tiny little noise like I was when she was in our room – or like I would if we set up the monitors. It’s actually quite cute – her little yell that she makes when she’s ready for me at night sounds like she’s screaming “MOMMMMM”. I’m pretty sure she is.

This weekend we had company so we gave them our bed and slept on a mattress in her room so that we wouldn’t get her out of the habit of sleeping in her crib. Um, yeah. That night definitely served to reinforce that I am happy with the decision to move her. I did not sleep a wink.

I’m hoping now that she’s in her own room we can start to work on getting some longer stretches of sleep. What do ya think, Eva? Sound like a good plan?

Yay for getting good rest! Luke slept in his room from day 1 cause he was a noisy sleeper too. Not much rest in that! I bet she will start pushing back the early AM feeding, if not you can always helper her along by holding her off for 5, then 10, then 15 minutes each night until she gets the hang of it.

Congrats on the transition! I know what you mean about being kept up by a loud baby and thinking every noise just meant that they were going to want to feed soon (even though it was just a noise!)

My almost 2 year old is still in our room - I kind of hate it, but we are in a one bedroom, so don't have a choice! haha
