Eva - editted

My Sweet Big Girl,

Last weekend, you turned 3. We had so much fun celebrating your birthday. Truly, as you get older and learn more about the world it is so fun to watch you take everything in and process day to day life. Even more so, seeing your excitement and anticipation for your birthday was so fun.

You are growing into such a wonderful young lady. You have a heart of gold. You are inquisitive, full of wonder and questions. You take it all in, every second of every day. You don’t miss a thing. Sometimes it’s scary. You go from sweet to sour in no time at all, which I realize is par for the course at your age. You are stubborn and quick tempered and prefer it when things go a certain way – your way. I have no idea where you get these traits from. You are a sweet little mommy, always caring for your baby sister and your babies. You love to do crafts, play school, play restaurant, I spy, clues, and hide and go seek. You love to play outside. You love SuperWhy, Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins. You love reading books together at bedtime. You love cuddling with Mommy and Daddy first thing in the morning. You love going to preschool and spending time with Miss K while Mom’s at work.

You are my little side kick and I just love watching you discover new things every day. You really can’t stand to miss out on anything and always need to know the scoop. You are a social butterfly and make friends wherever we go.

It is so cliché to say this, but I just can’t help it. I have no idea where the time has gone. It feels like it was just yesterday that I met you for the first time, yet at the same time, I cannot remember or even imagine my life without you. You have changed my so totally and completely. For the better.

Forever, you will be the one who made me Mommy.

Can’t wait to see where the journey to FOUR takes you.

I love you a tonny, ton, ton…

and with that, we say goodbye to summer

July 16th is the last time I have posted anything on this wee space. This might be the longest blogging hiatus I’ve ever taken since starting. The truth is, summer sped past me at an alarming pace. Doesn’t it always? This morning, I dropped my big girl off for her first morning of preschool for the 2013-2014 year. I came home, put Baby Girl to bed, made myself a deliciously sweet iced coffee and decided that this morning … I will do nothing. Of course, there is a list as long as I can imagine of things that need to be done. I’m still catching up from a long holiday, but this morning, it all can wait. It’s been over two months since I’ve had time to myself in the morning like this. So, today I will savour it. I decided it was a perfect time to stop in for a little catch up.

The girls and I enjoyed our summer. Oh so much. As much as it zoomed past and seemed to be over before it started, we truly did make the most of it and take full advantage. We spent time at pools, at the beach, at the zoo at least once or twice a week and finished the summer off with a bang by spending two amazing weeks at the cottage.

The girls are at fun ages. While Eva’s age is incredibly trying and Gwen wears me out before my feet hit the floor in the morning, they are sweet and oh so fun. They are beginning to play together more and more each day. I see Gwen learning the ropes from her big sister all the time. They are starting to fight and butt heads. They are starting to learn to share. Eva is starting to renegotiate her place as Big Sister now that Gwen has started to express her desires and ideas more strongly. Gwen is learning that crying doesn’t always make Mommy give her what she wants.  I guess this is life with two toddlers.

Next week (well, today actually as I have a meeting this afternoon) things will change a bit as I start back to work. I am incredibly blessed to have a job that allows me to still spend most of my time with my kids. They will be with daddy one evening a week and with our lovely neighbor who is babysitting them for one day a week. Aside from those hours, when I’m on campus, I will try to get the rest of my work done during sleeping hours and on weekends when Dad is around. It will be busy. I’ve spent some time trying to get myself organized in preparation – some home organization and freezer meals, mostly.

The canning season has also begun. So far, my parents and I tackled peaches and dill pickles at the cottage and I’ve done salsa and pears at home. There is still a lengthy list of things I’d like to get canned in the next month or two. Once I started, I felt like I unleashed a hidden monster. It’s been two years since I’ve canned since last year I was drowning in new baby/new house crazy and we didn’t plant a garden. Our cellar shelves have gotten awfully bare so I’m glad to be able to restock them.

My hope is now that we are falling back into a more predictable and normal routine, I will be able to be more organized with my life – which will hopefully include once again carving out time to maintain this blog and document our life here.

For now, it’s time to finish sipping my iced coffee and enjoy a few moments of quiet. (and mentally prepare for my birthday, which is tomorrow, people. Shameless plug) ;)

Eeba says … lots and lots of things, mostly in the form of 4839028 questions a day

The age that Eva is at is challenging. Like, super challenging. And the closer we get to 3, the worse it seems to be getting. So sometimes I really need to stop and remind myself of the fun that this age brings, too. She is so inquisitive, learning more about the world every day. Of course, that manifests in the form of 4890358340 questions a minute, but I am attempting to see the beauty in that instead of always getting annoyed and shushing her. I am trying to engage in meaningful conversation with her, as I aid her learning about the world.

So because I need the memory refresher of how cut and fun and exciting this age can be, I decided it was time for another post all about my girl Eebs.

It’s not secret that E loves to sing. She sings all day, every day. Recently, her favourite song is “We Shall Assemble”. And it’s another one of those ones that will make me so sad when she finally realizes what the actual words are and corrects her. Because at this point, “Glory and honour and dominion” comes out “glory en tonor and ominia!” I die a little each time.

***

A common phrase lately has been “But my favourite part is/isn’t _____”. Mostly she uses this to get out of doing something she doesn’t want to do or stopping doing something she does want to do. “Evalyn, it’s time to go inside”. “But my favourite part isn’t going inside. My favourite part is staying outside”.

***

On the way to church a while back she piped up and asked me if Jesus was a boy or a girl. I told her he was a boy. The response? “Mmhm, okay, so does he stand up to go pee?” Face palm.

***

She participated in a few days of Bible Day Camp at our church a few weeks ago. On the last day as we were driving there she said, “Do you know what I did at Bible Day Camp? I clapped, jumped and PRAISED GOD! I told the kids ‘We HAVE to be quiet. We have to praise God!’ He is in my heart and He is in your heart so I will SEND IT UP TO HEAVEN". Do we have a future television evangelist on our hands?

***

Last week, one of Eva’s friends from preschool came over for a play date. And let’s just say the date didn’t start out so well. She had brought along a baby doll and both girls decided that that baby was the absolute and only thing worth playing with. So, the first fifteen minutes or so were spent refereeing in a major way. At one point, her friend’s mom said, “What do you think Mrs. F (their preschool teacher) would say if this happened at school? Maybe we should call her and ask her”. Next thing I knew, Eva had a toy phone up to her ear and was saying, “Uh huh, yes, okay, I will tell her” and then put the phone down and said “P, Mrs.. F said you have to give me that baby”.

***

She is very into describing things. If I ask her to pick up the book on the floor she will say, “This book? This book that is on the green carpet that is beside the pink bow and underneath the yellow pillow? Is that the book you are talking about? Is that the one you are meaning?” It’s even funnier when she speaks this way to describe herself. “Eva, you are sweet”. “Who is sweet mom? Are you saying I am sweet? Are you saying this girl with a blue dress and a ponytail on the side who is sitting on the couch eating an apple is sweet? Is that the girl you are talking about?” One of the best ones was when she said, “The lady who was the pink cupcake pants on (um… HER) had to go to the hospital last weekend (not last weekend, more like, in February) because she had an ouchie pee pee”. Yep, we’re still talking about that one.

***

She uses the phrase “Sure can” a lot. She said to her Grandpa “We can’t watch Diego today but we sure can watch Dora “and to her Papa, after telling him about ordering onion rings at the restaurant, “I didn’t like the inside but I sure did like the outside” (sidenote: fried food lover like her Mama). Another one of the best ones was when we went out for dinner with my aunt and uncle and she ordered herself shrimp and rice. When she started eating she said, “This shrimp is yummy but I sure didn’t order coleslaw”.

***

She’s also very humble. She will be quick to tell you that she’s a great singer, or to tell her Nana, “Nana? You know what? I’m really awesome”.

***

When we went to the pool for the first time this summer, I was surprised at how brave she got. I decided that we were best to get her a puddle jumper, even though we will most always be 1:1 ratio when swimming. I tried to order it online but they were on sale and the website wouldn’t work. I decided I’d just get it in store, but when I got to Walmart, discovered they don’t sell them in store. So, I told Eva I would find one a different time. That weekend, we were up north for my family reunion and my cousin’s kids had them and let her borrow one. As we were walking on the beach, I told her that what she was wearing was the floating thing I had tried to buy at walmart but couldn’t find. She said, “This is the thing you tried to get me? But they didn’t have it? Well, that’s HORRIBLE because I LOVE THIS”.

***

Last week we had a situation where Gwen projectile vomited in the grocery store. Eva was so confused. She kept saying, “Did Gwen spook or did she spill her whole smoothie? Do we need to change her dress now?”

***

She has a little trouble with the world regular. It often comes out regigular or regilla. Think, a cross between regular and vanilla. Recently, I figured out that she actually think regular and vanilla are one in the same. I guess I’ve probably described vanilla ice cream as ‘plain’ and also used regular and plain to describe the same thing. Anyway, somehow along the way she’s equated vanilla with being regular. When we were up north at my family reunion, the chairs in our cabin were rather low, making it tricky for her to sit at them and reach her food at the table. I tried to convince her to sit in Gwen’s booster seat to eat for added height but of course this is too babyish and she’d have none of it. She sat there for two seconds and then said “Mom, I just want to sit on the vanilla chair, okay?”

***

A few weeks ago, Evan was spending the morning at home working in the shop. I took advantage of the time when he was here to put Gwen for her nap and take my big girl out for a donut date. On the way home she said “I just love being with my mommy. This is my favourite day”. HEART BURST!

***

Eva’s excitement leading up to Gwen’s birthday party was amazing. She was just so thrilled about it. I decorated for it the night before and when she got up that morning it was like Christmas. She was so pumped, “MOM! I love these decorations. They are so beautiful. They are perfect! They look so pretty!”

***

And speaking of Gwen’s party, that combined with a few preschool friend’s parties and  few other birthdays we have celebrated – my girl has birthday on the brain. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t ask, “Is it my birthday party now? Is it September yet? Is it September and twenty second? Did ___ and ___ and ___ (listing all the names of people I’ve told her have to have birthdays before her) have their birthdays yet? At my birthday party I will let my friends pull on a piñata but it will be my turn to open my presents all by myself”. Also? She wants a lollipop birthday. And told me she wants her own phone, lawn mower, boat and toy car for presents. Well.

She loves her magna doodle. And lately, she always wants me to take pictures of her creations. Here we have a cow with a bow in her hair, a horse with a raincoat on, a pig with purple eye balls and two baby chicks.

    June 30 iPhone

***

I asked her how her nap was when she woke up one day. Her response? “Terrible. I was dreaming about crocodiles and they bit my arms so now I have bug bites and that's what is making my nap horrible”.

***

One day we were going to bake cookies. I told her she needed to clean up her toys first. She said, “Okay, you can clean up the princesses. And then you can clean up all the rest”. Not quite what I had in mind.

***

Speaking of cleaning up, I seem to have created a monster. Today she was refusing to lay down for her nap because, in her words, “The toy stroller is not asposed to be in here! It’s asposed to be in between the blocks and the dollhouse!”

***

Kids always have a way of keeping us humble. Like when she says, “Oh mommy. Do you have another baby in your tummy?” and when I say no she pokes my stomach and says, “Then what’s this?”

***

She is kind of the definition of oldest child. As in, she’s as bossy as bossy can get. Not just to Gwen, but to anyone. She likes to be in charge and tell everyone exactly what they need to do and when they need to do it. We’re working on this one. The other day, she said to Gwen, “Okay, Gwen. You need to stop crying right now or you won’t get any snacks or any drinks all day”. Wow, that’s some tough love.

***

I made pasta salad and Eva picked an artichoke out of it. She asked what it was and when I told her artichoke, she looked up, totally fearful and startled and said “WILL I CHOKE ON IT?”

***

We were driving up north for the long weekend and we passed a transport truck hauling cows. Eva asked Evan where they were going and the thing is, with a husband who is a hunter and living on a farm, these things don’t get sugar coated. Eva knows that animals die and then become food that we eat. So, Evan was explaining to her that they were in that truck going to the butcher shop to be made into meat to sell at the store. Anyway, that whole conversation is beside the point, really. The actual point is that for the next twenty minutes, she said some variation of BITCHER shop probably 600 times.

***

We went out for Sushi with my parents and brother/SIL on our way up north. During lunch, Evalyn asked her Unco for money. He handed her a fifty and she said “No, not this kind. I want real money. Do you have any pennies?” Um, girlfriend has much to learn.

***

When we were getting ready to leave our family reunion (where there is over 50 people, I might add) Eva told me, “I’ll say bye to all these people but I’m not huggin’ dem”.

***

One day while we were tidying up, I asked Eva where the thermometer for her Doctor set was. She said, “I don’t know but you can keep looking. If you look beside the fridge you’ll probably find it”. Two guesses where it was?

***

She is mastering the art of stalling bedtime. She comes up with every excuse in the book, including, but not limited to coming out of her room, crying to tell me, “Tomorrow you will have to carry me because I will have sick legs”. Another one she likes to do is just ask a million questions about everything as I’m trying to say goodnight. One day she was busting out random questions about nothing and I just kept saying “I love you” over and over again and she finally said, “Mom, I love you, too, okay? BUT WHY DO PUPPIES SAY WOOF?”

***

She has 12 months of big sisterdom under her belt, and the sweetness just hasn’t stopped. The other day she was sitting on her porch, feeding her baby and saying "I'm breasting baby Yadi. I have milk like you because I am a mommy too. So I am giving her milk from my breast feeds!"

***

I asked her what is in her heart and she said, “It’s a thing in my tummy and it is for to love God”.

***

“Mom, do you know why I frewed (threw) my playdoh? It’s because I was being rude”.

***

While playing Doctor with me, she checked my heart and said, “We’re not quite done, my dear”. Then when she was done, she moved on to Tigger being her patient and said “There ya go, big boy. This won’t hurt a bit”.

***

This morning didn’t start out so well. She woke up on the wrong side of the bed…to put it lightly. By breakfast she had finally calmed down and told me "In the bathroom I cried quietly and that was a little bit bad choice. But in my room I made big bad choices. Dad told me not to do that".

***

Phew, that was a long one. Until next time.

12 month stats

Gwennie Girl,

Gwen's 12 month post On your actual birthday I focused on all the gushy stuff so today (before we are too far past your birthday) I want to take a few minutes to document all about what you have been up to this month. To start with, you are a tiny little peanut. You weigh 18lbs 11 oz and are 30.5 inches. You wear 9 or 12 month clothes and size 4 disposable diapers. You are on the medium setting of your medium cloth diaper covers.

Your 7th and 8th tooth came through (the 7th on the day of your birthday party and the 8th a few days later) and we were SO glad that after the horrible go of teething you had between 10-11 months that these ones came in without a peep. We’re hoping that now you will get a bit of a break from the whole teething game. Because it is no fun, not at all.

Gwen's 12 month post3

You still nap twice a day, usually around 8:30-9am and around 1-1:30pm, both lasting anywhere from 1-2 hours each. The nice thing about you is that when we are out and about you have figured out how to be more flexible. You roll with the punches and are able to go without the morning nap if we’re busy. You go to bed between 7-7:30 and sleep until 6:30-7am, sometimes waking up for a little snack around 5:30-6. You nurse 4 times a day and drink a bit of cow’s milk in between. You are getting weirder with your food – you don’t like to sit in your high chair, you’re much more of a grazer, just like your big sister. Mealtimes are becoming kind of tricky, so I like on the go times when I’m able to toss food in front of you and watch you gobble it up without missing a beat. In your highchair, however, you are typically only happy with crackers, veggie straws or bagels.

Gwen's 12 month post1

We’ve been spending our days doing fun summer stuff – pool, beach, park, zoo – you name it. And you love it. Well, you love the pool as long as you get to stay on the deck with food and you love the beach as long as you just get to muck in the sand. You aren’t so much a fan of the water yet, and in fact, it seems that the pool and beach have ruined bath time for you, as well. As much as you used to love baths, it is now like wrestling a rabid jungle creature trying to wash you.

I’m pretty sure the zoo is your favourite place as you are totally in love with animals. You sign birdie the whole time we are there. Animals capture your attention. You know how to make sounds for cow, puppy, monkey, and horse. Of course, they all sound fairly similar but I can tell the difference. Other than that, you don’t say a lot other than uh oh, hot, hat, and Mama (only when you want to – never on command). You sign a lot though, you point to everything and say “uhh, uhh” and sign milk, more, please, all done, thank you, eat, puppy, bird, cup. Despite your quiet nature (well, that is a misnomer, even though you don’t say many words, you certainly aren’t quiet – hello screamy baby) you know how to get your point across and are learning to communicate really well.

I love that suddenly, you have a strong understanding of almost anything I say. I can ask you where your cup is and you will go get it, I can say “Go get a ____” and you know what I’m saying, you even know what I mean I give you clothing and tell you to put it in the laundry (gotta start you young).

You love to sing and dance. I adore it. In the car, if Eva and I are singing, you are undoubtedly singing along. You love to play with the Little People princess castle and sing with them. It is jus the sweetest ever. You also love to play with the kitchen toys, babies, the tea set, the toy camera and blocks. You love reading books, and are starting to recognize and point to some items. You love going to see the chickens and horses and going for walks. You love playing in dirt and sand, playing catch and playing peek a boo. To you, the only place worth being is outside. You bring me your shoes and hat and said “haaaaa” all.the.time. You are whiny and like to be right by my side at all times – independent play has been all but non existent lately. You want to be doing exactly what your big sister is doing all.the.time. And I mean, exactly what she is doing. You are not content to play beside her with a similar toy – you always want the exact thing she has. My job of referee has definitely begun.

On your actual birthday, we enjoyed a nice little dinner with M and L and a chocolate chip cookie cake made especially for you by your big sister. We loved celebrating with you.

Gwen's 12 month post2

You are turning into such a goofy, wonderful little girl. Watching you grow up, learn and explore just makes my heart so full. I can’t wait to see what our next year together holds – although I sure hope it doesn’t zoom past as quickly as this year has. Even though you are all big, and grown up and toddler like, I know that when you snuggle up to nurse or cuddle with me, that you are still my sweet baby. I love you more than I could ever say with words.

Stay sweet, my girl.

the part-ay

Since Gwen’s first birthday party was well over two weeks ago, I guess it’s about time to write a little recap. The theme of Gwen’s party was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Katie was the one who put the idea in my head and I’m so glad she did because it fit just perfectly. Not only because Evalyn’s first birthday party was also the title of a theme song (A Bushel and a Peck) …(sidenote: I seem to have started a trend here… I need to start thinking of other theme songs that could work for parties for future children)….but also because throwing a rainbow theme birthday party in the summer is the easiest thing ever.

Basically, anything that is any bright colour would work for decorations and bright colours are very easy to come by in the summertime. Most of the decorations were things I already had or things from the dollar sections at Target/Walmart and the Dollarstore.

When I thought of the theme I set Elizabeth off to work on creating an invitation and decoration package. And she did not disappoint. Obviously. Her work is always so wonderful. If you’re looking for invitations, birth announcements, nursery prints or anything of the sort, head over to her shop.

After a few (okay, more than a few) back and forths (thanks for your patience Liz!) we had exactly what I was looking for…

Gwens party post

She also made coordinating cupcake toppers, favour tags, food labels and a banner … all which you will see in the following photos. Combined with a friend from church cutting scalloped circles and rectangles die cuts out for me – the decorations were easy and perfect!

I had a major brain fart and planned Gwen’s birthday for Father’s Day. Why didn’t anyone tell me this in the planning process? I’m not sure. Anyway, it wasn’t until well after the invitations had been designed, printed and distributed that I even realized it. Ah well, cute baby Gwennie trumps Dads any day of the week.

When I set out to plan Gwen’s first party, my goal was to have a cute, fun party without going (too far) over the top like I did for Eva’s.

Well, HA. HA. HAHAHA.

The thing is, once I start, I just can’t stop.

But being totally honest, I really did achieve this goal. Although my husband still teased me about the level of detail at this party, it was not as intense as Eva’s. Making 40 candy apples the day before a birthday party? Never again. Like I said, most of the decorations were things I already had and/or inexpensive and easy to make or put together. Especially since I suckered my girl Briar into making all the tissue poms for me. One of my favourite accents to the decorations was wrapping a ton of variously sized, empty boxes in two different patterns of wrapping paper that fit with the colours and theme of the party. This was such a cute, simple and CHEAP way to add a lot of POP to the tables. Adding the extra height and patterns really did a lot for the look of things.

I decided on a taco bar for the food – of course, there’s nothing inherently rainbow like in a taco bar, but it was fun and colourful and most importantly, delicious. I did both taco beef and shredded BBQ taco chicken. We also served chips, salsa, guacamole, queso, veggies and southwest ranch dip, texmex quinoa salad, taquitos and 7-layer dip. For dessert, there were cupcakes (duh) made my Evan’s talented cousin, rainbow fruit kabobs made by my girl C-Bisc, with “fluffy cloud” dip (marshmallow fluff and cream cheese), and a candy buffet.

For favours, I skipped making favours for the adults (sorry, friends!) and just stuck with the kids. At Eva’s first birthday there were hardly any kids so I did the candy apples for adults but this time, there were a plethora of kids so it was great to focus on them. I gave the kids a sand bucket with shovel, filled with “rainbow” stuff – freezies, rainbow goldfish, skittles, playdoh, sidewalk chalk, crayons and bubbles. For a guestbook, I had a copy of a “Somewhere over the Rainbow” book for people to sign (this is the same thing I did at Evalyn’s party). I also had tissue poms hanging in various spots and a 12 month photo display of Gwennie. I don’t have good pictures of either of these things because they were all on windows. The tissue poms hung in place of our curtains and the 12 monthly photos were mounted on scalloped rectangles and displayed on the window behind the food table.

decorations

I started to get a wee bit (okay a lot bit) nervous in the week leading up to the party because the weather forecast was not looking good. We were expecting about 25 people, plus kids and well, our house just isn’t cut out for that many people. We were so blessed that the rain stopped about an hour before the party started and the sun poked through the clouds, giving us a beautiful afternoon for the party. The bright side is that our icky, unfinished basement is in better shape than it ever has been since we got it all ‘cleaned’ up in the event I had to banish the boys downstairs to play pool. It was a good thing it turned out to be inside, too, because my Sweet Girl was pretty overwhelmed with the chaos when everyone started arriving. It was good for for us to get outside and spread out.

The day was all together so much fun – a wonderful afternoon of celebrating our sweet girl. I guess for the rest of the post, the best thing is to just let the photos do the talking…

Normally I don’t think I’d post so many photos of people eating but every time I look through the pics, I can’t help but laugh at the “baby row”, as I called it. Seven little high chairs all in a row. Are my kids blessed or what?

The cake smash.

cake

After Gwen was finished with her smash cake, I thought it would be HIGH-LARIOUS to pretend to smash it in Evan’s face. Then he started asking me why the icing stunk so bad. I was completely annoyed by him asking this out loud in front of everyone since Caley (who made the cupcakes) was sitting RIGHT there. And, well, you know, she's pregnant and hormonal and I was afraid she would cry and be embarrassed about the stinky icing. So I gave him an evil "shut your pie hole right now if you know what's good for you" stare and took a whiff of the cake to prove it didn't stink. And, yeah, you know the rest. Joke's on me. I was covered in icing for days. cake1

It’s so hard to believe my second baby’s birthday has already come and gone. A year has been quick enough to go by in an instant and long enough to change our hearts forever. Thank you to everyone who has celebrated her first year with us!

twelve months of gwenna

Gwennie Girl,

I blinked.

IMG_0768

I blinked one short blink and suddenly, here we are. A full year (to the exact minute if this post publishes when it’s supposed to) since that beautiful July morning when you stole my heart and made me the mother of two.

It’s gone so fast. Yet, somehow, at the same time I feel like I have soaked up and savoured your first year in a way that I didn’t know was possible. I cherished those lazy naps in my bed with you. I cherished the months that you spent hours snuggled between Daddy and I in our bed. I cherished watching you grow and learn and develop and explore. I noticed every milestone. I didn’t wish it away. I cherished it all. Maybe because I knew just how fast these days would be gone.

You are my sweet slow down baby. When life is moving too fast, you have taught me, at the most important times to stop. To stop and slow down and just be.

You are a beautiful soul. You light up every room with your smirks, smiles and giggles. You make friends wherever you go, waving and chatting with everyone you see.

People always talk about the second child living the shadow of the first, and going unnoticed. I think those people are crazy. You are in the spotlight more often than you’re not. Because, you see, not only do a have a proud Mommy and Daddy doting over you, playing with you, loving on you and getting excited with you about every discovery and development you make – but you also have a Big Sister who loves you up just as much, or more, than we do. She is your biggest fan. I have waited and waited for the novelty of having you around to wear off for her – but it hasn’t. Of course, there are starting to be moments of disagreement and annoyance between you two, but for the most part, she adores every single thing about you.

My blue-eyed girl – the moments we have shared this past year are so cherished in my heart. There is something about the first year that’s just so special. You have come so far, changed so much. From a tiny little babe nestled on my chest to a walking, running, playing, spirited little girl who is joy to me. You are very evidently becoming your own person. You are dramatic and funny and silly. You love to be outside – bringing your shoes to me within two minutes of waking up and banging on the glass of the windows, screaming at me if we don’t head outside right!this!moment. You love your puppy. You love your Daddy. And the two of them together is the best thing. You love your big sister. You love to play with her and copy her and most of all, annoy her. You love all of these things – but at the end of the day, you are Mama’s sweet baby. You begin and end your days cuddled in my arms and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

You have captured us – so fully and so quickly. It’s only been one short year – but it’s as though you’ve been a part of our family forever. We can’t remember what life was like without you, and we’d never want to remember. You have made our hearts a million times bigger and filled us with a million times more love than we could ever imagine.

Thank you, sweet girl, for being ours and for making this year the best one yet.

All my love,

Mama

what’s that, you ask?

So what is this picture you ask?

photo

Oh, nothing.

Just the blurry (sorry, Jillian makes my arms wiggly) sweaty-hot-mess face of a Mama of two after completing DAY 30 of The 30 Day Shred.

That’s right! I did it. It took me 32 days (one day off at Gwen’s party and one other day off after doing a big long hot walk with C-Biscuit), but I did it.

So, excuse me while I write a completely braggy post. I’m sorry, I just have to. I may need to look  back on this someday and remind myself that I CAN DO IT. Also? I want this to serve as an encouragement to any of my readers who may be in the place that I was a month and a bit ago and let you know that YOU CAN DO IT, TOO. You really, really can.

So, here’s the first thing I’ll say … if you are starting a workout/diet program and you want to see results, TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS AND BARE BELLY BEFORE PICS. Really, do it. Even if you never intend to show the pictures to anyone, you will want them for your own comparison. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any before pics (wish I had) but I am SO thankful that I stopped on Day 3 of level 1 to take my measurements. Had I not done this I would not have any tangible results.

Because, you see, the scale has not budged.

I stopped drinking Pepsi regularly over two months ago. Within three weeks, I had dropped 8 pounds. Other than walking more, and trying to eat better overall, this was completely a result of no pop. And then, a month ago when I started the Shred, I stepped on the scale to see that I had put 4 pounds back on, resting at 4 pounds below my original starting weight.

And guess what?

Today, I am only 1 pound below that weight. The thing is I am far leaner and more toned than I was a month ago. I can see it and feel it. You know what they say, muscle weighs more than fat, right? So, take before and after pictures and take your measurements.

The second thing I’ll say it DO IT. YOU CAN DO IT. The beauty of the Shred is that it is intense but it’s do-able. Let’s face it, I wouldn’t have success in joining a gym. I live in a rural area, so going to the gym would be a trek. And then there’s the whole ‘when do I go’ thing, since not that many gyms around here have a childcare program. That’s what I love about the Shred. I can always find 20 minutes to slot it into my day. It meant that some days I was working out at 9pm, but so be it.

The last thing I’ll say is TELL PEOPLE YOU’RE DOING IT. If you’re anything like me, if you tell people, you’ll stick with it. I am far too proud and stubborn to give up after telling everyone and their neighbor that I’m doing a workout program. I checked in with my mom, husband, best friends, and sister nearly every day of the month. I knew if I didn’t Shred people would be ON MY BACK.

I’m not going to share my actual before/after measurements because that’s just too personal, but I will tell you how much I lost in each area:

Before measurements taken May 29, 2013 (day 3 of The Shred). After measurements taken June 27, 2013 (day 30 of The Shred)

Butt – lost 0 inches (baby got back?)

Arms – lost 1 inch

Thighs – lost 2 inches

Chest – lost 1 inch (womp, womp)

Hips – lost 2 inches

and, wait for it… here’s the killer:

Waist – LOST 5 INCHES!!!!

So that there in itself has proven to me that it’s been worth it.

Next up? Ripped in 30. Bring it, Jillian.
